APs are DONE! And I am back!!!

Image
AP testing is finally over! I've had a pretty heavy work these past two weeks and now it's time to hit the water! I got on the water straight after school not wasting anytime..... And let me tell you it was a total success! I caught a bigger brown trout and caught a bluegill! Check the pictures below.. Caught with an olive woolly bugger

Getting a fly stuck in my finger!!!!!

Image
So,you know when people tell you learn from your mistakes! Well, their not playing! I was fishing then all of a sudden my line gets wrapped around my pant while in the water; I reach in the water to unwrap because I got worry about getting a hole in my waders.... Then I lose my balance the rod goes up and my fly goes straight in my finger! I thought it was a little ding until I looked like this.. But, everything was okay! I just had to get past the painful part pulling it out!

Fishing Update!!

Fishing has been fantastic! I been going on my normal early morning schedule. Progress continues to increase beyond of what I would have ever have thought! My casting abilities and my knowledge about fly fishing in general! I don't know what I would be would the support of the community, staff, friends ,and family! So Thanks for everything!

Backwards Planning

So I am assuming that the last day for my project is June 7th,  there are a few things that I want to happen by then... I have a bunch of blogs I want to upload about my leader set-up, more videos on knots, interviewing locals on there fishing experiences, and some new cast I've learned. Also, coming down to a fully outlined planned presentation for June 1st.

FEEDBACK Reflection

First I would like to thank Ms. Becraft for reading my blog and giving me her opinions on it. From her feedback, I noticed that I have been leaving some things out. I need to make some blogs talking about my Final Presentation, Stress management, and how I feel when I am in the water.

Catching My First Brown Trout!!

This happened in 5 mins I had to fish on Wednesday. It was a little guy but the feeling was great! Now I can cross off Brown Trout on the list of species I wanted to catch throughout this project. I will also be posting an updated list again to show my progress.

I GOT A NEW ROD!!!

Image
My grandfather bought this old fly fishing rod from this person that was cleaning his garage out. This rod is an old Abu Garcia rod and I can say it is a 5 wt rod. It casts nice and smooth and I can't wait to test it!

Fishing Report April 24th

I went out in the morning around 8:00 I had a fish on!!! But it came off... BUT TOMMOROWS A NEW DAY

In Class: Happiness Revisited

When do you feel most happy?  I feel most happy when I have had an experience or have received new ideas      2.Response to article. This article truly breaks down happiness and helped me understand "flow". I never noticed how flow has led me to  create new ideas and to try new things.        3. Where am I in the Flow Chart? I would say that I am in the state in which you are so involved in an activity that nothing else seemed to matter.       4. How does this change or remain throughout my project? I remained everyday I am out on the water or walked to the water. I get this crazy happy feeling that only happens when I am deeply passionate about something. I really feel I am one with the water! I am in a really deep focus and relaxed at the same time.

Catching My First Barracuda!!

Image
This happened on the last day of my trip, I had no wifi in Vieques where I stayed. But, I caught 2 monster barracudas. This feeling I had fighting these fish were drastically incredible! I caught some small pan tropical fish that were still a great fight on the fly rod as well. But, I has a tremendous experience in Vieques! Check out the pictures! Truly Amazing!

Arriving in Puerto Rico!

I left New Jersey at 5:30 in the morning straight to San Juan, PR!

I Caught my First Salmon!!

Image
I did my normal before school fishing preparing the night before... So I went out nymphing with a drop shot rig; then BOOM! The strike was like no other fish I've caught! I saw it jump four times,  and it was definitely pulling my drag. I had some trouble landing this fish without an net but I finally landed it with a smooth swing to the rocks. This local fisherman man named Pete, I met was there to help me which I deeply appreciate! This ecstatic moment really put me on cloud 9 for the rest of the day. Check out the pictures below! The face that fish left me with the rest of that day

Mentor Meeting Recap

Mentor meetings have been great! I love to go to my mentor and share what happen throughout my week with him. He continues to help me with key information needed to be successful in the fly world! He has been contacting some of his friends, to see if they could take me out with them. So I am personally excited about that!

A great morning of fishing!

Image
I take the early morning bus every morning to get out on the water. I really just get excited! So I rush to the other side of the school to get ready. It normally takes me 2 minutes to get from the front of the school to the back of the school. I take 5 minutes to put on waders and setup my fly rod and then BOOM! IM IN THE WATER! Then patience hits and then the magic happens; I feel like I am in my own world. It's really great! I was using a 5wt rod and a Orange Egg Pattern

April 5th Fishing Report

Image
It was another great day of fishing!! I spent the whole night setting up! I was using a drop shot leader setup. This setup worked great! I will make a tutorial later on, to show how to make this setup. But, I had caught 4 Suckers! Creating that amazing feeling you get when you catch a fish on the fly. Check out the pictures below!

First Day of Trout Fishing ( April 1st )

I went fishing at Upper Fall Creek. The water was very high! I walked pretty far to find some slow pools. Once I found a nice spot I made a few around to clear some area. I was there for about 3 hours and didn't have much luck. But, still was a good day of fishing! Tomorrow  the weather is going to be awesome so I might go to Ithaca Falls so stay tuned!

RECAP: Ithaca Fishing Day

Image
Soft- Tackle Ithaca Fishing Day was awesome! I talked to many local fly fisherman and received tons of knowledge. There was a live Trout/ live bug exhibit which was great.  Also, I was able to tie my first fly! Woolybugger

In Class Blog- NPR "Disrupting my Comfort Zone"

Brian Grazer disrupts his comfort zone by contacting experts in their fields. He does this to be taught something and challenge his ideas about himself and the world. I disrupt my CZ when I go up to a local fisherman or anybody; I do this to gain some knowledge from their experiences and insights that they might have. I think I will always disrupt my comfort zone throughout this project. I will continue to meet new people, take risk and take new things.

Practicing [ In- Class Reading ]

Based on the "Practicing" Reading... I feel that I am using my resources very well and collecting as much knowledge as I can. There is still so much more to learn! I want to improve my blogging abilities; I need to really learn how to post some videos on my blog that are in high quality to show the knots and casts that I have learned so far. I will continue to absorb knowledge and explore the fly fishing world!  Stay tuned.....

Another GREAT DAY OF FISHING!

Image
I went out fishing today and man oh man! I caught two Suckers! The fight was great and to feel the rod felt even better. When I landed the fish, Jamie Lovette was coming down to check on the water and he took a good picture of me with the fish. So SHOUTOUT to Jamie Lovette for the picture!

#3 Mentor Meeting with Mr. Mellander

The meeting went great! We did our normal walk down to Fall Creek and took a look at the water levels. Afterwards, I brought out my 5wt rod so we could work on my basic casting( Overhead ) and Mr. Mellander could give me some instruction/tips to perfect my cast... My basic casting is pretty good and getting better! Then Mr. Trumble came by to say hello and demonstrate some of his casting skills!  It was a wonderful day altogether!  24 days till Puerto Rico! WOOH HO!

Ted Talk(How Frustration Can Make us More Creative)

Harford's talk influences my past struggles I had to have been a learning session. Having a problem will make your brain work harder and causing you to learn something new.  I know there have been and there will be more challenges in my WISE project. When I get my fly caught in a rock or something, I have to be gentle and think of the way it entered that rock to best get it out. When I am casting and I get my fly struck in a tree...... That really makes me think about which cast to use because of my limited space. Link to Ted Talk:     https://www.ted.com/talks/tim_harford_how_messy_problems_can_inspire_creativity

Task Force Journal Review ( Jay Reynolds )

1.  The Physical Journal: The first entry describes the WISE project well... He briefly states what he plans to accomplish in the next 3 months. As far as regularity goes his blogs are pretty consistent but since I don't have access to his blog I am unable to see the rest of his blogs. The length of his blogs were good! Couldn't really come out with a full amount of blogs he completed. 2. Entries: Jay Reynolds did a great job of blogging his resources as well has the ones he found thought his journey. 3.Review: My initial reaction to his blog was good. It felt great reading another person's blog similar to mine. The goals he first had turned into reasonably goals along the way. He had researched from multiple sources then test what he had learned during his WISE period in the school day. 4. What I enjoyed most about this journal: I really liked reading his blogs and picturing his reactions through his reading. The pictures were also pretty nice and showed the action w

Puerto Rico!!!!

Image
I will be going to Puerto Rico for spring break! April 15th Baby!  The opportunities I will have to go fishing and catch some exotic species ON THE FLY are endless!

Fishing Report March 12th

Image
I went fishing Marth 12th expecting to have a great day! I had looked at the water discharge on (USGS Ithaca Falls)https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?04234000; noticing that the water was super low. I had made some leaders with 15lb mono for butt section tapering down to my 10lb fluorocarbon(1x)...... I was set to go nymphing! Then went I got to Ithaca Falls I realized that it was too cold to fish! There was anchor ice and the temperature was like 15 degrees. But! The scenery was beautiful!

Water Status

Image
Oh man it's cold! But... the water is back to 270 discharge. The water looks very clear and beautiful. I am definitely going to get out and fish for at least an hour. Stay tuned for the next blog!

ITHACA FISHING and CONSERVATION DAY!

Image
Ithaca fishing day is coming up and fast... I am really looking forward to attending this event to expand my connections in the Ithaca Fish Fishing Community. I hope to learn more about the local waters and receive some basic knowledge on fly fishing as a whole.

Daily Fishing Post

Image
Today was rough..... The water was really high. I tried nymphing with a stonefly but it was really hard to get it to the bottom. The water was rushing like a storm and the wind was gusting. But, as always it was a good day of fishing!

#2 Mentor Meeting with Mr. Mellander

Image
Today, I brought all my gear to the meeting so we could go through an examine everything I have and will need to get for the future. Mr. Mellander recommended me to invest in some tapered leaders; since that will be the most efficient way to setup and adjust my leader set up. We also took a nice walk down to the bridge above fall creek to take a look at the water and see if could spot a fish.

My first fish on the fly!

Today, I hooked up on a giant sucker! Just the feeling of being hooked up on something in the water really made my day! The rain added some more color to the water making it easier to setup. I had a 7 foot leader on with 18 inches 1x tippet material. Can't wait to get back out there!

Barnsong Reflection

a. I better understand that using your resources to the fullest is very important. Honestly making sure you are having fun and knowing you are gaining knowledge is a clear part of your WISE project. b. I gotta say that I was impressed in the whole wood shaving and cutting process was very neat. I am pleased to know that he was able to finish his barn and gain tons of knowledge to best assist him in the future. c. What times of the week did he work on his project? d. I see the film as an additional form of motivation to keep growing my tree of knowledge.

#1 Mentor Meeting with Mr. Mellander

My first mentor meeting went great. We talked lots about the materials and sources that will come to play during my journey. We went over some short and long term goals that I will like to complete during my journey. Also, talked about the weather patterns and water levels and how that might have a effect on the fish.

Annika Browning Blog Review

Today I read Annika's blog. I am impressed by her blog theme and her organized posts. The most detailed and interesting part was her blogs from the Morocco trip she took recently. I would love to hear more about her budgeting and planning for this semester. What struck me was the video of her frosting the cupcakes. I realized for my own blog that I could incorporate some videos to demonstrate casts and knots I learn on my journey.

Sophie Izzo's Blog Review

Today, I read Sophie Izzo's Yurt Life blog. The most detailed part was her description about her childhood and how she became in love with nature. I would love to hear more about her plans for staying in a yurt and things that follow. What struck me is her dedication to her upcoming adventure in a Yurt. I realized for my own blog I could add some pictures to give people an idea of my fly fishing journey.

The Beginning

I am ready! I have been waiting for this moment all year. I will be meeting with my mentor this Tuesday and go over the outline for the semester. I have been reading tons of fly fishing books and tutorials that continue to inspire me. I hope I am able to get out on the water this week or maybe next week. The weather conditions have been pretty rough considering temperature and water levels. But Spring is Coming! Ps. Getting new waders! Excited!

Two Week Plan

I plan to spend as much time as I can in the water and also with my mentors to maximize my knowledge of fly fishing. I want to fish at least 3-5 days a week and leave the days I don’t to gather information to add to my blog.  I envision my blog to be a storage for all my achievements with pictures and videos expressing them. Taking what I learn from my research( Mentors, Online, Videos, and definitely locals that I meet) out in the field to achieve a stepping stone. As far has the first week goes I will start observing and learning how to read the water before going in the water. Talking to local people I see fishing and watching. Stopping by my local fly shop and receive some fly tips here and there to prepare myself for the water.(http://www.eflytyer.com/) Going into my second week, I do want to get my feet wet and experiment what I have learned from the first week.
